Taking a Cruise: What to Pack

Untitled Document

The only thing more horrible than trying to figure out what to pack for your vacation is making yourself unpack after the vacation is done, after you have been living out of you suitcases for a week or so.

As far as taking trips on cruise ships go, it can be hard to figure out what one should take and what one should not take. Ship's lodgings offer a lot of amenities, but if you are a first time cruiser chances are you are not fully aware of the options you have available to you so it can be easy to over pack. For instance, a first time cruiser would have no way of knowing, unless they asked, that most cabins feature hair dryers so there is no need to bring your own. Hotel rooms do not have hair dryers in their rooms all the time, so why do ship's cabins? Perhaps because of the nature of the voyage and the activities that take place on the cruise ship, but is also a part of the luxury experience.

So let's go over a few of the things you MUST pack, a few of the things you might wish you had on your voyage, and maybe even a few extras for those of us who just can't pack light to save our lives.

The Essentials
When taking a cruise, especially a cruise that crosses the United States borders, make sure that you bring:

-Your passport and/or state identification card or driver's license are sometimes required on certain cruise lines

Popular Cruise Ship Travel Options
When it comes to planning a vacation aboard a cruise ship, many individuals focus their planning solely on their cruise. For many individuals, this can be a costly mistake. While the cruise itself is important, so is how you plan on making...

that leave the country. Your vaccination certificate may also be necessary in such circumstances.
-Proof of automobile insurance is necessary if you plan on renting a car during the time you spend on dry land.
-Bring a watch, perhaps with more than one time zone since you will most likely be cutting across more than one zone
-Be sure to bring clothes for whatever you plan to do on your voyage. If you like to attend fine dining restaurants, and dance in the ship's lounge you may want to bring dressy clothes, but if you plan on spending time by the pool and on deck playing games, jeans, tee shirts, and bathing suits should suit you just fine. Plan ahead by finding out what activities you have available and take it from there.

The Not-So-Essentials
-A camera
-Extra memory for your digital camera, if you have one
-A camcorder
-Your reading glasses and something to read on lazy days on the deck of the pool.
-A first-aid kit
-A small flash light for emergencies (always smart to have!).

As far as the essential things to take on the cruise, this is just about where the list of the most important things to take along ends. Do your best not to over pack for your cruise voyage as most people tend to do. Remember that you are not moving, and this is a vacation where most of the essentials are provided for you already.
